PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus capable of preventing mis-conversion, missing of video audio data and reduction in transfer efficiency in the case of applying conversion/inverse conversion of external video audio data to other video audio data form so as to facilitate the processing inside a personal computer being an external device at recording and reproduction so as to relieve a load on a CPU of the personal computer and reduce the power consumption. SOLUTION: A recording data conversion means 106 receiving first form video audio data from the external device converts the first form audio data into second form audio data, records the second form video audio data produced thereby to a magnetic disk apparatus 101 while temporarily storing the data to a buffer memory 108, in the case of reproduction, a reproduction data conversion means 107 receives the second form video audio data read from the magnetic disk 101, converts the second form audio data into the first form audio data and reproduces the first form video audio data produced thereby.
