A method of processing data includes: i) on the occurrence of an application event generating a message in XML specifying a data processing engine to process the message; ii) routing the message to the data processing engine and outputting a response formatted in XML; iii) processing the message by the specified engine and outputting a response formatted in XML and iv) transforming the response to another format according to a format information file. A method for generating formatting information for a formatted page of information includes: i) storing formatting information in a database; ii) extracting formatting information as an XML file and iii) converting the XML file to define the required information wherein the formatted page is a web page and some formatting information is converted to a Cascading Style Sheet to define background information for the web page, some of the formatting information is in XML format and defines foreground information for the web page and some formatting information is in XML format and defines data content for the web page.
