PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and a method, capable of detecting black levels in an effective pixel area, preventing drifts of the black levels and following the changes of the black levels due to changes in temperature by interrupting incident light, when imaging in a low-speed shutter mode. SOLUTION: When operating in the low-speed shutter mode, the apparatus outputs stored charges due to dark currents of photosensors in an effective pixel area 220, by closing a mechanical IRIS (infrared interferometer spectrometer) at predetermined time intervals and can perform image processings at the black levels of the pixel area 220 itself, in response to the outputs of the stored charges. The apparatus can follow the changes in the black level in the pixel area 220, according to temperature characteristics by appropriately controlling the time intervals to detect the black levels in the pixel area 220 by making the mechanical IRIS close.
