The invention relates to a drive mechanism for gates, meant for automatically closing / opening the same. According to the invention, the mechanism comprises a gearmotor (A) and a lever mechanism for attaching to the gate (E). The gearmotor (A) comprises a worm gear (8 and 9) and some spur gears (10 and 11, 12 and 13), supported by a bearing in a body (J) formed by two half-housings (15 and 16). A tubular output shaft (14) wherein a compact axle (33) is introduced drives at one end (g) an apparatus with levers of adjustable length (E) and at other end a mechanism for arresting the rotative motion of the shaft (33), with two tappets (34 and 35) limited on some supports (30, 40) which actuate two micro-switches (43 and 44) located on a support (38) fixed on the gearmotor housing. The coupling of the driven gear pinion (11) on the intermediary gear shaft (12) is achieved by means of a wedge (23) located in an axial channel (b) machined in the shaft and in a front channel (c) machined in the wheel and the interruption of the linkage and the hand drive of the gate, in case of an electric breakdown takes place by actuating a bolt (25) located inside the intermediary gear shaft (12) which determines the compression of a spring (24) and the removal of the wedge from the wheel channel (c) and its withdrawal inside a lid, determines the interrupting of the linkage and the independent rotation of the intermediary shaft (12) in relation to the gear pinion (11).
