PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and easily perform erasure or protection of a file. SOLUTION: In a recording and reproducing apparatus, a detecting means detects an end of reproduction of the recorded file. When the detecting means detects the end of the file, an inquiry means inquires of a user whether the file is to be erased or not. When the user indicates erasure of the file toward the inquiry, an erasing means erases the file. Thus the user can simply and easily erase the file. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
