A composition comprising: (i) 0.01% to 30% by weight of an associative polymeric thickening agent, and (ii) 0.01% to 55% by weight of a compound represented by formula (I), wherein: Z is H, CH3, or C2H5, Y is H, CH3, or C2H5, M is 1 to 30, N is 0 to 30, R1 is H, CH3, C2H5, C8-22alkyl or alkenyl, or nothing, R2 is H, CH3, C2H5, C8-22alkyl or alkenyl, O, or nothing, X is N, O, S, P, Si, PO3, or SO3, and Y is R2 when N is O. The composition is used in a solution to impart or enhance hydrophilic properties to a hard surface, wherein the hydrophilic property is effect to impart or enhance anti-fogging, anti-static, or water-sheeting properties.
