PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a rotating electric machine wherein thermal expansion in a rotor core is suppressed and electric power is efficiently converted into torque or turning force is efficiently converted into electric power, and obtain a machine tool excellent in accuracy of finishing by installing this rotating electric machine. SOLUTION: A motor 1 comprises a shaft 2; a rotor core 3 formed by laminating a plurality of thin plates 5; a stator core 4 formed by laminating a plurality of annular thin plates 10; a magnetic field portion 12 which products revolving magnetic fields; and an induction portion 9 which produces running torque by an induced current. The thin plates 5 are smaller in thickness than those of the annular thin plates 10. A gap 13 is so formed as to prevent the rotor core 3 and the stator core 4 from being brought into contact with each other due to thermal expansion. Since the thin plate is small in thickness, the iron loss is reduced, and the rotor core 3 becomes less prone to be thermally expanded. Therefore, the gap 13 can be formed into a small size. When a machine tool is equipped with the motor 1, since the amount of thermal expansion in the rotor core 3 is reduced, and a tool directly coupled with the shaft 2 is less prone to be displaced.
