A reference database of a plurality of travel data sets is maintained in a reference database, each travel data set representing a travel option from a travel origin to a travel destination and including an origin identifier and a destination identifier. To plan a travel route, one or more travel preferences and at least one user significance value for one of the preferences, are obtained from a user and the travel data sets are retrieved from the reference database to construct one or more candidate travel plans substantially complying with the required travel route. Penalty values based on the user travel preferences are calculated for the respective travel data sets in the candidate travel plans, and the candidate travel plans are ranked on the basis of the calculated penalty values and displayed in ranked order to the user.
