PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the noise and to suppress the saturation and electrostatic breakdown of a GMR head. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium comprises forming a thin magnetic metallic film on a nonmagnetic support, in which the surface electric resistance of the thin magnetic metallic film ranges from 1×103 to 1×107Ω/sq., the product Mr.t of a residual magnetization quantity Mr and a film thickness (t) ranges from 4 to 13 mA and the residual magnetization quantity Mr ranges from 160 to 360 kA/m.
