A container ship 1 suitable for open ocean or shallow river work and not dependent for operation on the provision of onshore container handling facilities, includes a portal crane 3 moving on rails on either side of the container hold(s) 2 and stowable in an area of the hold. If the crane is not stowed in the hold then containers may be stowed in the vacant area. For river and bridge work the ballast may be shed from between the double bottom tanks and the ship's bridge 4 and superstructure may be retracted into the hold. For ocean work, the holds may be provided with watertight hatch covers, ballast may be taken on board, containers can be stacked on top of the watertight hatch covers, and the ship's bridge and superstructure may be elevated.
