PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoding method in which image data having a background pattern can be well compressed even when the background pattern is less correlated with nearby image data in the case of compressing the image data. SOLUTION: As the encoding method for encoding the image data for a plurality of pages, this method is provided with a first memory for storing image data on a page to be encoded, an encoding means for encoding the image data stored in the first memory and a second memory for storing image data on the previous page and the encoding means performs encoding while referring to the image data on the previous page stored in the second memory.
