PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately set the image read conditions (exposure and LUT gradation conversion characteristics or the like) in the main scanning by decreasing the number of the lightest or darkest points of an original to be missed in prescanning. SOLUTION: In the case of prescanning all pixels are scanned in the main scanning direction without thinning and pixels are scanned in a subscanning direction while thinned. Thus, the number of the lightest or darkest points on the original to be missed in the prescanning is decreased and on the basis of data obtained by the prescanning, the image read conditions (exposure and LUT gradation conversion characteristics or the like) of the main scanning are appropriately determined.
