A method for treating wood material where: a) contacting the wood material with an aqueous treatment solution comprising an iron salt and an oxidant to provide impregnated wood material; and b) separating the impregnated wood material from the aqueous treatment solution. The iron salt is complexed with an organic ligand selected from one or more of aromatic amines, polyamines and anionic nucleophilic compounds. The oxidant is selected from peroxides, persulaftes, chlorates, iodates, periodates, ozone, peroxyacetic acid and hydroperoxides.
