A refuse bin has a standard base unit (8) onto which can be fitted one of a number of cover fittings for different functions. A basic module has a hinged lid through which refuse can be pushed. Different modules have different sizes of top flap. A cowl, open to the front, can be fitted over the lid to ease the disposal of refuse into the flap, e.g. refuse pushed off a food tray. Another fitting can include a document shredder. The container can be fitted with a plastic bag for easy emptying, or a fabric bag for collecting soiled laundry.
