The invention relates to a method for producing 2-anilino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine by reacting phenylguanidine and/or one of its salts with acetylacetone in the presence of water and/or without removing amounts of water that are produced by the reaction. For the reaction that is preferably carried out at pressures ranging between 0.1 and 10 bar and at temperatures between 40 and 180 DEG C, especially phenylguanidine carbonate and phenylguanidine hydrogen carbonate are used, preferably moistened with water. The invention provides a method for obtaining, by means of a technically simple method and under environmentally friendly conditions, in very good yields a fine-grained product that has excellent purity.
