It comprises: means for intelligent connection management (26) to identify an incoming protocol and to select an outgoing protocol and a communication channel with reference to databases (20, 22); and means for protocol conversion (24) controlled by the management means (26) to connect a service provider (FS) using a channel in accordance with a first communication protocol and a user (U) using an off-Internet channel in accordance with a second communication protocol.
