A linear actuator, wherein when a rotating shaft (3) drives a rotatingly driven member (4), rollers (6) are displaced to a first position where a frictional force against an outer ring (5) and the rotatingly driven member (4) is low to allow the transmission of a rotating force from the rotating shaft (3) to the rotatingly driven member (4), and when the rotatingly driven member (4) drives the rotating shaft (3), the rollers (6) are displaced to a second position where the frictional force against the outer ring (5) and the rotatingly driven member (4) is low to fix the rotation of the rotatingly driven member (4) to the outer ring (5), whereby a power transmission from an output side to an electric motor (2) as an input side can be stopped without using a worm and a worm wheel with a rather low transmission efficiency.
