It is intended to provide substances inhibiting or promoting apoptosis of nerve cells, a method of screening the same, and methods and kits for diagnosing and treating a disease associated with apoptosis. More specifically speaking, substances inhibiting or promoting the function of the CGI-94 protein or the interaction between the CGI-94 protein and Smac/DIABLO to thereby inhibit or promote apoptosis are provided. It is further intended to provide a p18TFP protein as an apoptosis inhibitor and a DNA encoding the same, as well as medicinal compositions for treating a disease associated with apoptosis containing the above protein or DNA.
