The invention relates to a method of producing tiles having an external metallic coating that is applied directly to the glazing of the ceramic. The inventive method, which employs an electric arc evaporator, can be used to produce good adhesion on the substrate formed, without the need for intermediary binders or layers. Said method can be used to obtain tiles comprising an external metallic layer consisting of one of the following elements: chromium, zirconium, tantalum, titanium or nitride or carbonitride of the aforementioned metals, thus producing a brightness that is greater than 300 2, a GHA resistance to chemical attack (in accordance with ISO 10545-13) and to chemical abrasion and a surface hardness that is greater than 1500 kgf/mm2. Depending on the material used in the coating, the tile comprises colours such as golds, metallic greys or metallic violets.
