The invention relates to an access control system (12; 68; 80), and to a corresponding method for verifying the authorization of the opening of a barrier (14) in or on a building (G) whereby, in a normal state, the barrier (14) is locked in order to prevent access by a non-authorized user. The inventive system comprises a reading device (42; 92), a control device (38) and an actuating device (32; 96) that communicate with one another. The actuating device (32; 96) unlocks the barrier (14) when the reading device (42; 96) receives an authorization signal (56). This authorization signal (56) can be transmitted by an identification transmitter (54) worn by an authorized user (48). The identification transmitter (54) and the reading device (42; 92) automatically communicate with one another whereby causing the actuating device (32; 96) to unlock the barrier (14) as soon as the authorized user (48) is located within a reading area (50) that extends far enough around the barrier (14) to enable the authorized user (48) to open the barrier (14) without actively using a closing means.
