The load-bearing glass body is a glass solid rod or tube (1), with force-transfer underlays (2) at both ends to take up forces (F), with an elastic limit which is not breached when a load is applied to the glass pillar. The glass tube has an outer diameter of 80 mm and a wall thickness of 3 mm and a length of 700 mm, preferably of a compound glass material. The flat underlay surfaces are of steel. The contact surfaces of the glass tube and the underlay plates are ground flat and in parallel, with roughened surface structures, with a lower roughness than the permissible elastic distortion of the glass body when under a load. An intermediate layer between the glass body and the underlay surfaces compensates for thermal stress.
