<p>A retractable writing instrument has an elongated body including two opposing hollow cylinders (12;2). One of the two cylinders is fixed to an ink reservoir (6) including a writing tip (8). The ink reservoir is housed within the hollow cylinders. The writing tip is retracted into the body when the cylinders converge along a common axis to a first position. The writing tip is extended from the body when the cylinders diverge along the common axis to a second position. In some instances, one of the cylinders defines a track (3) to direct relative movement of the two cylinders between the first and second positions. The other of the two cylinders defines a guide traveling along the track. A pocket clip is formed on one of the cylinders. A three piece retractable pen is made up of a movable cap mounted on a pen barrel, and a refill secured to either the cap or the barrel. When the cap is moved relative to the barrel, the refill is either extended from or retracted into the pen body. An optional flexible sleeve forming a finger grip may also be provided to act as a spring, under tension or under compression, to urge the cylinders to travel to the first or second positions. The writing instrument may also include a second retractable tip which points in a direction opposite to the first writing tip.</p> |
