PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying a material for a liquid crystal display element and a raw material thereof by removing ionic substances contained therein. SOLUTION: The method for purifying a material for a liquid crystal display element and a raw material thereof comprises contacting a raw material of a liquid crystal composition or a raw material of a material, which is brought into direct contact with the liquid crystal composition when the liquid crystal composition is enclosed in a liquid crystal display element, with a silica gel having an aminosilyl group chemically bonded to the surface thereof or a silica gel having calcium adsorbed on the surface thereof (A) as it is or as a solution in an organic solvent when the raw material is liquid and (B) as a solution in an organic solvent when it is solid thereby to remove an ionic substance contained in the raw material of the liquid crystal composition or in the raw material of the material.
