In the present invention, a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag location system comprises a base station having a radio frequency (RF) transmitter and a number of RFID tags each having an RF receiver. Each RFID tag stores a tag identifier and the base station is able to accept and store a user input tag identifier for each of the RFID tags. In response to a user input, the base station pages a particular RFID tag by transmitting an RF signal encoded using the respective tag identifier for that RFID tag. Each RFID tag includes a signal generator that, in response to being paged by the encoded RF signal, outputs a sensory signal capable of detection by a human, for indicating the location of the tag. <IMAGE>
