OPTICAL COMMUNICATION MODULE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission module which is made small-sized and can transmit light signals fast.

SOLUTION: A surface mount type optical transmission module 1A is constituted by installing on a substrate 10 a semiconductor laser 20 as a light emitting element which converts an electric signal into a light signal and a plane waveguide type optical waveguide element 25 having an optical waveguide 26 as an optical transmission line which transmits and outputs the light signal from the semiconductor laser 20. Then a driving element 30 for driving and controlling the semiconductor laser 20 is installed at a specified position on the top surface of the optical waveguide element 25 on the side of the optical transmission side (downstream in the light signal transmission direction) when viewed from the semiconductor laser 20. Consequently, the driving element need not be arranged at a distance from the semiconductor laser 20 to make the module small-sized.
