PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system equipped with a wavelength selecting element which is suitable for a video camera or an electronic still camera or the like, whose chromatic aberration is inconspicuous, which has high optical performance all over the image plane, and which is made inexpensive, small in size and light in weight. SOLUTION: The optical system has an objective optical group OB consisting of an optical element having refractive power and a diaphragm, a non-refractive power optical group PL consisting of an optical element having no refractive power, and an imaging device I in order from an object side along an optical axis. The optical group PL has the wavelength selecting element SC which selectively makes short-wavelength light almost non-transmitted one, and the element SC satisfies a specified conditional expression.
