PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save power consumption of a map display when it is used as a portable one. SOLUTION: A navigation apparatus 1 usable as both an on-vehicle one and a portable one is mounted on a frame 21 of a vehicle. When changeover operation to an on-vehicle mode is carried out by an operation part 5, a using mode changeover portion 7 changes a drawing portion 9 over to the on-vehicle mode, and changes a GPS reception portion 2 over to a usual mode whose detection period is shorter. Reversely, when the navigation apparatus 1 is detached from the frame 21, and changeover operation to a portable mode is carried out by the operation part 5, the changeover portion 7 changes the drawing portion 9 over to the portable mode, and changes the reception portion 2 over to a power saving mode whose detection period is longer. The drawing portion 9 draws a map image comprising a current position along with a current position mark which corresponds to the mode, using map data in the periphery of the current position stored in a map memory portion 4, on the basis of the current position detected newly by the reception portion 2.
