PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a valve lift of a hydraulic variable valve timing system even at the time of starting when an amount of operation oil is missing without requiring a particular operation. SOLUTION: In addition to the hydraulic variable valve timing system by a master piston 6 driven by a cam 1 and a slave piston 7 followed to the master piston 6 and opening/closing-driving a valve 18, a rocker arm 2 driven by the cam 1 is provided. An auxiliary arm 11 is pivotally mounted to a tip end of the rocker arm 2 through a pin 10 parallel to a rocker shaft 4. When an amount of operation oil for connecting the master piston 6 and the slave piston 7 is lacked, the auxiliary arm 11 is unbendably restricted against the rocker arm 2. When the amount of operation oil is sufficient, by providing a switch lever 14 making the auxiliary arm 11 bendable, and when the amount of operation oil is insufficient the valve 18 is automatically opening/closing-driven by the rocker arm 2 and the auxiliary arm 11.
