PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an N-substituted (meth)acrylamide polymer having a controlled molecular weight useful as a constituting component of a functional polymer. SOLUTION: The N-substituted (meth)acrylamide polymer is produced by polymerizing an N,N-disubstituted (meth)acrylamide derivative shown by formula (1) (wherein R1is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R2is a hydrocarbon group; and X is a substituent convertible to a hydrogen atom) and then converting the substituent X in the resulting polymer into a hydrogen atom.
