PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a selecting method for a finishing winder for a supercalender capable of enhancing the total productive efficiency and reducing the cost by making optimization through computation using the past performance of failure generation and the movement cost. SOLUTION: The method comprises a database which stores the brand of a web taken up, trimming pattern, and the failure information after the process with finishing winder, and from these stored pieces of information, computes and stores the rate of failed article generation per brand and per trimming pattern for each finishing winder, and from a plurality of finishing winders, a one for a taken-up web after the supercalender processing is selected based on the information of the database through a cost computing process, and in this process, the expectation value of the failure generation cost, for example when subjected to a processing by each finishing winder, is computed based on the brand taken up during the supercalender processing and the trimming pattern, and thereto the movement cost from the supercalender to each finishing winder is added so that the total cost is determined, and thereupon a computation is conducted to select that of the finishing winders which has the least total cost.
