A coil structure for use as the X or Y gradient coil of an MRIS apparatus. The coil structure comprises two or more linked windings (20, 22), each of which is arranged to produce a selected current distribution. At least some of the current distributions of the windings are adjacent and substantially non-identical and these current distributions when superimposed form the required current distribution. <IMAGE>
