<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus made compact and inexpensive by preventing a density detection means from being used severally, and always accurately detecting density without being influenced by the condition of the surface of a transfer material carrying belt or an intermediate transfer body on which a developer image for detecting density is formed and capable of yielding a stable high-quality image as an image forming apparatus using a plurality of image carriers and performing image control by forming the developer image for detecting density. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a roller member 91 coming into contact with transfer material carrier 8 or the intermediate transfer body on a downstream side from a plurality of image carriers 1a to 1d in the moving direction of the carrier 8 or the intermediate transfer body, and the density detection means 92 installed to be opposed to the member 91 and detecting the image density of the developer image on the member 91. The developer image for detecting density is transferred and carried on the carrier 8 or the intermediate transfer body, and then transferred to the member 91 from the carrier 8 or the intermediate transfer body, and the image density of the developer image for detecting density on the member 91 is detected by the density detection means 92.
