PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem wherein a conventional vehicular speed control system can be slow in follow-up, or cause uneasy feeling upon acceleration since intention of a driver is not reflected when transferring to the invalid from the valid of brake operation. SOLUTION: An ACC 2 of an automatic speed control system has a constant speed control means 43, and an inter-vehicle distance control means 42, and switches to the inter-vehicle distance control mode by a control mode switching means 41 when the inter-vehicle distance is a specific value or less by detecting the inter-vehicle distance and the relative speed with a preceding car from a radar 1. When transferring to the invalid from the valid of the brake operation, the speed is returned to a preset target vehicle speed V0 according to the return speed of a vehicle corresponding to the return (release) speed of the brake pedal by the driver.
