PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To certainly sense the sheets transported upon being distributed to transport path(s) in a single row of in a plurality of rows. SOLUTION: An exhaust device 25 is composed of a sorting part 36 and a sendout part 38, wherein the sorting part 36 is furnished with a normal transport path and a special transport path for transporting sheets, which are switched by a path changeover part 45. In the neighborhood of the inlet 40 to the sorting part 36, a sensing part 71 is provided, which consists of three sheet sensors 72, 73, 74 arranged on the three transport paths, and when the sheets are distributed in three rows by the distribution part located upstream, all sensors 72-74 are actuated, and when distributed into two rows, the sensors 72 and 74 are actuated, and when fed to a single row only the sensor 73 is actuated, and after the leading edge of any sheet is sensed, monitoring for its trailing edge is started, and sensing of the trailing edge allows acknowledgement of passage of the sheet.
