<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for monitoring and measuring gas concentrations in combustor (100) applications. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus is a gas sensor (102) having a plurality of electrodes (204 and 206), which cooperate with a single electrolyte cell (202) for detecting the presence and concentration of gaseous components of a flue gas (212). A voltage is generated based on the flow of ions caused by differing gas concentrations as detected by the electrodes across the electrolyte. The change in voltage is correlated to each other and used for obtaining the gas concentrations of detected gases such as combustible gases, nitric oxides, carbon monoxide. Then the operation of the combustor is optimized to heighten efficiency to minimize undesirable gas concentrations of the flue gases. A calibration gas is introduced for calibrating the apparatus, and a reference gas is provided for the electrodes as a base for correlating the gas concentrations to one another. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
