METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING POLARIZATION-PLANE-HOLDING OPTICAL FIBER AND POLARIZATION-PLANE-HOLDING OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a panda-type polarization- plane-holding optical fiber having a high mode double refractive index and a low loss at a neighborhood of 1.38μm, and a panda-type polarization-plane- holding optical fiber manufactured by the method. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the panda-type polarization- plane-holding optical fiber having stress-giving parts for giving stress to the core which parts are located so as to be symmetrically positioned at both sides of the core in the clad, and holes for the stress-giving parts are opened in the clad part of the base material for optical fiber by a mechanical grinding. The inside face of the holes is mechanically given a smooth finish, and the surface of the stress-giving material is also mechanically given a smooth finish. The stress-giving material is then inserted into the holes to produce a base material for the panda-type polarization-plane-holding optical fiber, and in that the panda- type polarization-plane-holding optical fiber is manufactured by drawing the base material for the panda-type polarization-plane-holding optical fiber.
