PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of preparing refined ruthenium chloride purified only to the tervalent ruthenium ions averting the intrusion of impurities by a reducing agent, etc., by electrolytically reducing an aqueous ruthenium chloride acid solution in which quadrivalent ruthenium ions and tervalent ruthenium ions coexist and reducing the quadrivalent ruthenium ions to the tervalent ruthenium ion by hydrogen ions. SOLUTION: The method of preparing the refined ruthenium chloride comprises bringing the aqueous ruthenium chloride acid solution into contact with a hydrochloric acid solution across a cation exchange membrane, inserting an cathode into the aqueous ruthenium chloride acid solution, inserting the anode into the hydrochloric acid solution and passing a direct current between the anode and the cathode thereby reducing the quadrivalent ruthenium ions to the tervalent ruthenium ions on the cathode side and purifying the quadrivalent ruthenium ions to the tervalent ruthenium ions.
