PURPOSE: A fall protection type walking robot and a controlling method thereof are provided to prevent the walking robot from falling by recognizing an edge portion of a high region. CONSTITUTION: A fall protection type walking robot includes a camera, an infrared sensor, and a control portion. The camera is adhered on a head of the robot in order to capture an image. The infrared sensor is adhered on the head of the robot in order to sense the distance between the infrared sensor and a bottom. The control portion performs control operations in order to search a boundary of a target, hang a head of the robot according to a predetermined ratio between the boundary position of the target and the vertical length of the image, and recognize a cliff according to a sensing signal of the infrared sensor.
