PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetostatic field generator miniaturized and improved in accessibility to a patient for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system available for navigating a sugical instrument and monitoring the position and condition of a diseased part in real time or the like during a surgical operation. SOLUTION: In the magnetostatic field generator for generating a uniform magnetostatic field having an upward or downward direction within a space 18 to locate an imaging target, the magnetostatic field generator is composed of a main magnetic field generation source 10 located in the lower part of the space for generating the magnetostatic field within the space, corrected magnetic field generation sources 11 and 12 located while being confronted at the interval of the space and a support 20 for holding the main magnetic field generation source 10 and the corrected magnetic field generation sources 11 and 12 at prescribed positions, and the upside of the space is opened.
