<PICT:0374796/IV/1> Rags are carbonized by introducing liquid acid in finely divided form into a heated drum containing the rags, which are dried prior to the introduction of the acid. As shown, the rags are placed in a rotary drum 1 heated by gas burners 3, the hot gases circulating around the outer wall of the chamber 5 and escaping through a pipe 6. During the drying of the rags, the expelled moisture escapes through pipes 7. When the drying is completed, the valves 16 are closed and liquid acid is injected into the drum from a container 14 through a nozzle 9. To force the acid into the drum, compressed air is delivered from a compressor 12 to the container 14. When hydrochloric acid is used, carbonization may be effected at 90-140 DEG C. |
