PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing methanol, capable of effectively producing the methanol from methane by using methanotroph, and to provide the methanotroph used in the method. SOLUTION: As for this methanotroph, a ratio of methane monoxygenase activity thereof to methanol hydrogenase activity thereof is reversibly increased under severe conditions. The method for producing the methanol from the methane comprises laying the methanotroph under the severe conditions. The methanol is produce from the methane by using the methanotroph in the presence of the methanol in such a concentration that the methanol does not inhibit survival of the methanotroph.
