PURPOSE: A scanner for a portable terminal and a method for implementing an electronic dictionary function using the same are provided to recognize a character inputted through a scanner and display dictionary information of the character on a window of a portable communication terminal. CONSTITUTION: A scanning unit(11) reads a character. A character recognizing unit(12) recognizes a character inputted by an operation of the scanning unit(11). A dictionary database unit(13) stores dictionary information including an English-Korean dictionary and a Korean-English dictionary. A key input unit(14) inputs an external control signal by a user and a signal for deciding a language to be translated. A microprocessor unit(15) controls operations of each system in accordance with a signal being inputted through the key input unit(14), searches the dictionary database unit(13) in accordance with a character recognized in the character recognizing unit(12), and translates the character into a language selected in the key input unit(14). A connector(16) for a data communication is connected to a portable terminal, inputs contents changed in the microprocessor unit(15) in an interior of the portable terminal, and displays the changed contents in a display unit(17).
