PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a gas turbine engine 10, which facilitates reducing an amount of emissions from a combustor 16. SOLUTION: The combustor includes a mixer assembly 41 having a pilot mixer 42, a main mixer 44, and a center body 43 extending therebetween. The pilot mixer has a pilot fuel nozzle 54 and a plurality of axial swirlers 60. The main mixer has a main swirler and a plurality of fuel injection ports 98. The method comprises a step of injecting fuel into the combustor through the pilot mixer such that the fuel is discharged downstream from the axial swirlers of the pilot mixer, and a step of directing flow exiting the pilot mixer by means of a lip portion 108 extending from the center body into a pilot flame zone downstream of the pilot mixer.
