Control of the integrity and/or the degradation of a coating involves providing a coating having detectable luminescence under electromagnetic excitation; providing a luminescence detector and obtaining a signal; and comparing the signal with a reference value corresponding to a signal recorded for the integrated coating. The difference or differences of the signal observed are directly correlated to the state of the coating. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a coating able to present a detectable luminescence under electromagnetic excitation; (b) electric conducting or superconducting cables incorporating such a coating; (c) a metallic component incorporating such a coating; and (d) a method for the deposition of such a coating.
