PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device which can determine a proper adjustment range for focusing an optical part. SOLUTION: The focusing device for adjusting the focus of an optical apparatus is provided with an optical part 160 for forming a subject image, a contrast detection part 210 for detecting the contrast value of the subject image taken in by the optical part 160. a range finder part 190 for calculating distance information representative of the distance to the subject, an adjustment indication acceptance part 170 for accepting indication information indicating the focus adjustment of the optical part 160, a focus control part 180 which performs ascending contrast detection at the time of accepting the indication information by the adjustment indication acceptance part 170, a difference information calculation part 200 for calculating difference information representative of the difference between the in-focus position detected by ascending contrast detection of the focus control part 180 and the position of the optical part 160 corresponding to the distance information calculated by the range finder part 190, and a difference information storage part 150 for storing the difference information calculated by the difference information calculation part 200. The focus control part 180 determines a condition of ascending contrast detection on the basis of the difference information stored in the difference information storage part 150 and the distance information.
