PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrahigh pressure mercury discharge lamp having a high sealing strength by suppressing devitrofication or the like of a light emitting tube by reducing impurities in the emitting tube part as much as possible, and preventing a sealing part from being corroded due to the impurities or a halogen gas in the lamp having a small-sized light emitting tube, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the ultrahigh pressure mercury discharge lamp comprises a step of disposing a pair of electrode mounts 3 at a side tube 2 of the light emitting tube in which the pair of electrodes are oppositely disposed in the tube 1, the step of inserting an exhaust tube 4 in which an exhaust tube forming member 41 is inserted from the end of a side tube 2, the step of sealing the tube 2, the step of heat sealing foils 32 of the mounts 3, the step of removing the member 41 from the exhaust tube 4, the step of exhausting via the tube 4 or sealing a lamp sealing material, and the step of heat sealing the tube 4.
