<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve overwriting characteristics in a rewritable optical disk device. <P>SOLUTION: A controller 30 identified whether an optical disk 10 is an unrecorded disk or a recorded based on the inclusion of an RF component in the return optical signal of erasure power irradiation time. Recording power for the unrecorded disk is set smaller than that for the recorded disk.
