<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for discriminating the authenticity/soundness of a coin from a picture. <P>SOLUTION: The picture signal of a target coin is digitally processed, and sampling data obtained by extracting the pattern of the calculated coin picture for 360° at each fixed angle of extraction on a circumference and a basic template are relatively rotated to calculated angular displacement angle whose matching level is the most satisfactory so that the denomination and surface/back face of the target coin can be decided, and that the kind of the decided denomination and surface/back face can be confirmed from the pattern of the matching level when the sampling data and the basic template deviate by a prescribed angle of rotation with the angular displacement whose matching level is the most satisfactory as a start point to judge authenticity of the coin. Then, the total sum of pixel values is calculated for each prescribed small area in the prescribed angle pitch of ring data with the angular displacement whose matching level is the most satisfactory as a start point so that a density histogram can be prepared, and this density histogram is compared with the density histogram corresponding to the basic template so that soundness of the coin can be judged. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
