PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easily manufacturable polarization maintaining optical fiber having a high double refractivity without increasing propagation loss. SOLUTION: This polarization maintaining optical fiber is composed of a core 11, a clad 12 disposed concentrically with the core 11 around the core 11, and two stress imparting parts 13 and 13 roughly symmetrically disposed around the core 11. A cross section of the of the stress imparting part 13 forms approximately a crescent with both ends of two circular-arcs 13a and 13b having different radii jointed. The circular-arc 13b on the facing side of the stress imparting part 13 to the core 11 forms a concave part of the part 13, and the circular-arc 13a on the non-facing side of the part 13 to the core 11 forms a convex part of the stress imparting part 13.
