PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent misregistration. SOLUTION: A projection type display device comprises driving means 30 and 40 for displacing the fitting positions of two projection display elements 19R and 19B except one reference projection display element 19G in an X-axial and/or a Y-axial direction, an adjustment pattern signal generator 52 which applies pattern signals for adjustment of respective colors to the projection display elements of respective colors in order while varying the signals by the colors in the same pattern along the X axis and Y axis, a terminal T1 for inputting the output of a photosensor 55 installed in front of a screen 23 before the fitting positions of the remaining two projection display elements are adjusted, and detecting means 56 and 57 which detect output values when the photosensor receives pattern images for adjustment of the respective colors corresponding to the pattern signals for adjustment of the respective colors applied in order to the projection display elements of the respective colors and respective outputs of the photosensor are inputted through the terminal.
